Proof of reserves is useful evidence when its scope is clear. Begin with the date, the assets covered, and what the report actually claims to verify.

Understand the snapshot

Kraken's proof-of-reserves page describes its review process and the ability for clients to check inclusion of covered balances.

The result belongs to a particular review and time. It should not be read as a live guarantee about every asset, product, or future withdrawal.

Chainlink's introduction to proof of reserves provides broader context on reporting asset backing.

Inclusion answers a narrow question

A cryptographic inclusion check can help establish whether a balance was counted in the reviewed set. That is different from asking whether the platform has no other obligations or whether the business can withstand every stress scenario.

Imagine a fictional review covering Bitcoin and Ether on a certain date. A successful check for your Bitcoin balance tells you something about that review. It does not automatically extend the conclusion to a separate rewards product or a token outside its scope.

Verify through the provider's documented process

Navigate to the exchange's official website yourself and locate its current reserve-review instructions. Check the review date and the covered assets before comparing your balance.

Follow the documented inclusion procedure. Record which snapshot you checked and the result. If a balance is missing or differs, first check the snapshot timing and product coverage, then ask the provider for an explanation.

Do not send anyone a seed phrase or private key to “verify reserves.” Account-level reserve evidence is not a reason to disclose wallet secrets.

Reserve evidence is not a full financial audit

The SEC's investor bulletin on alternatives to financial statement audits distinguishes reserve reports from comprehensive financial statement audits.

Our reading checklist therefore keeps separate fields for reserve evidence, liabilities covered, the review method, independent reviewer, and the financial disclosures available elsewhere. A missing field stays unknown rather than becoming an assumed positive.

Turn a badge into a set of questions

Ask which balances are included, when they were measured, how control of the assets was assessed, and what limitations the reviewer states.

This is a practical way to compare transparency without pretending a single badge answers every custody question. The report is one piece of evidence in a larger relationship with the exchange.
